Capitol Hill is a metonym from the United States Congress, and is also the name of the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington D.C. It stretches to the east behind the Capitol and has a population of approximatley 35,000 people within two square miles. It is one of the oldest residential communities in Washington with its state-named avenues, 19th-Century row houses, brick sidewalks, and meticulously landscaped front gardens. The area is served by three Metrorail stations: Capitol South and Eastern Market on the Blue and Orange Lines, and Union Station on the Red Line, and also has the Metrobus running there, making it easy for people also runs there making it easy to commute in and out of the Capitol Hill area.
REAL ESTATE
This residential neighborhood is known from its rowhouses of different stylistic and time period varieties with everything from early 19th century manor houses, Federal townhouses, small frame dwellings, ornate Italianate bracketed houses and the late 19th century press brick rowhouses. In addition to single homes, a lot of Capitol Hill's rentals are in these row houses, either shared by multiple tenants or divided into individual apartments.
EDUCATION
Capitol Hill is included in the King County School Districts and includes elementary, middle and high schools. This area also has great private and charter schools available. Post-secondary education students living in the area have easy commutes to George Washington University, Georgetown University and Howard University, to name only a few.
RECREATION
Capitol Hill area consists of a combination of parks and grand avenues, easily accessible and inviting to everyone working and living in the area. It has 59 urban parks, the largest including Folger Park, Lincoln Park, Marion Park and Stanton Park. There is also the Maryland Avenue Triangles, the Pennsylvania Avenue Medians, the Eastern Market Metro Station, the Potomac Avenue Metro Station, Seward Square, and Twining Square.
For tourists and residents alike, Capitol Hill's landmarks include not only the United States Capitol, but also the Senate and House office buildings, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the U.S. Marine Barracks, the Washington Navy Yard, and Congressional Cemetery. Barracks Row or 8th Street SE, is so called because of its proximity to the U.S. Marine Barracks, and is one of the city's oldest commercial corridors. On weekends, the historic Eastern Market hosts artists, artisans, antique dealers, book and record traders, and flea market entrepreneurs who sell their wares alongside farmers offering fresh local produce. |
