Eastern Market in Washington, DC, is the oldest continually operated fresh food public market in Washington DC. Saturdays and Sundays come alive with the activities and attractions of the Eastern Market, which has become an internationally recognized destination.
The market itself, for which the neighborhood is named, is physically located at 7th Street and North Carolina Ave., SE 1 1/2 Blocks North of Eastern Market Metro, and offers a wide variety of fresh meats, seafood, pasta, poultry, baked goods, produce from the fields of several surrounding states, and cheeses from around the world. In addition, there are over 175 exhibitors selling such things as homemade ceramics and pottery, jewelry, crafts, furniture, and flea market items every Saturday and Sunday.
 In 2007, The American Planning Association (APA) named the Eastern Market Neighborhood in Washington, DC, as one of the 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2007. Criteria for this distinction include exemplification of exceptional character, and it highlights the roles of the planners in creating a community of lasting value.
Eastern Market was selected because if its civic pride and dedication to its revival, combined with its centuries-old vision for the community which sustains the area’s unique character.
The mayor of DC, Adrian M. Fenty, stated that “Eastern Market is the heart and soul of Capitol Hill.” The APA Executive Director, Paul Farmer, said, "The Eastern Market neighborhood stands out not only as a jewel of Washington, DC, but it shines as an example of the good that happens when residents care about where they live and take time to be involved.”
Historically, the Eastern Market neighborhood was included as part of the city’s original design of 1791, by Pierre L’Enfant. Though much has changed over time in the Eastern Market area, it still retains the street pattern and much of the open spaces of that original plan.
