The Potomac Avenue Metro entrance is located on the northeast corner of the intersection of 14th St. & Potomac Ave., SE, north of Pennsylvania Ave. The Potomac-Washington Metro area is one of the most densely populated areas in the city, with 1,522 people per square mile.
There are a few attractions which are located fairly near the Potomac Avenue Metro station. One is the Congressional Cemetery, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and where several prominent figures from our nation’s history are buried. Another a few blocks in the opposite direction is the US Marine Corps Museum.
The Potomac Avenue station is one stop from the Eastern Market which is a beautiful neighborhood named for the open market where local vendors sell foods, display for sale their arts and crafts, and the like every weekend.
Barney Circle
The Potomac Avenue Metro Station serves the Barney Circle area. Barney Circle itself was once a part of the now-defunct Washington streetcar system. It was actually the turn-around point for the southbound streetcars which turned around to head back north. The circle is named for Commodore Joshua Barney.
Homes in this area are more modestly priced than in some of the other locations within DC Metro. Barney Circle is a stable neighborhood that has attracted singles, young families, and retirees because of its convenient location and modest housing prices. The architecture in the neighborhood is diverse: some of the homes have modern siding, while others sport a stucco or brick exterior. Some homes have been finished in a Tudor style and porches are popular.
The residents enjoy a strong sense of community. There are many long-time residents who go out of their way to welcome newcomers. The Barney Circle Neighborhood Association meets monthly, and residents work together for the good of the neighborhood and to expand the revitalization currently underway.
